For this recipe, you will need…
- 15 oz. pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)
- ¾ cup apple cider vinegar
- ¾ cup pure maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon low sodium soy sauce
- 1/3 cup Worcestershire sauce
- ½ cup 100% tomato juice
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- ¼ teaspoon ground allspice
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground ginger
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
Step 1
Add the pumpkin, vinegar, maple syrup, Worcestershire sauce, tomato juice, tomato paste, and soy sauce to a pot or Dutch oven. Start whisking it together until it is thoroughly combined.
Step 2
Season the mix with pepper, cinnamon, and ginger. Continue to add garlic powder, allspice, and cayenne as you go. Continue to heat on low heat once incorporated.
Step 3
Put the pan on a simmer and cook for 30 minutes. You need to keep an eye on the barbecue sauce, so it doesn’t burn since it thickens very quickly.
Step 4
After the barbecue sauce has been cooked and thickened, transfer it to a mason jar and let it sit overnight.
Step 5
That’s all there is to it. The best part is that you can serve this Pumpkin Barbecue Sauce at room temperature with your favourite slow-cooked meat and vegetables. Alternatively, it can also be used to marinate meat or give stews a sweet and smoky flavour. The possibilities are boundless.
